Se estudian en este manual los orígenes del pensamiento occidental, desde la Grecia del siglo VI a.?C. hasta la Europa en crisis del siglo XV. El hilo conductor es el pensamiento filosófico,pero se tienen en cuenta también el pensamiento religioso y el científico, en estrecha relación con él. Aunque con momentos de especial densidad y plenitud, como el siglo IV a.?C. en Atenas o el siglo XIII d.?C. en París, se trata de una historia continua, que nunca se detiene. Se recorre íntegra, sin saltos, porque incluso en las épocas más oscuras se gestan nuevas ideas, y para entenderlas es menester verlas surgir. En la Antigüedad y la Edad Media se ponen los fundamentos del pensamiento posterior, se formulan los problemas, se inventa el lenguaje, se crean los conceptos con los cuales seguimos afanándonos en entender la realidad. Es solo la primera parte de una historia que continúa a través de la época moderna y contemporánea hasta el presente, pero una parte que condiciona todo lo demás. Si este texto consigue, más allá de datos y referencias, introducir, hacer sentir la importancia vital de este movimiento, de esta aventura del pensamiento,habrá conseguido lo esencial.
